Solargen is a project that set out to build a prototype solar electric generator.
The system intends to use a solar collector to focus the suns heat and then
convert this heat into motion and finally electricity. [more]

Project Overview
The aim of this project is to develop a low
cost system that converts sunlight into domestic electric power. This
power could be used to run all the lighting and domestic needs of a family
household. It would not consume any fuel or create any exhaust gases. It could
be set up in remote locations where 'cabled in' power is not available and would
give the users independence from national grid bills and power failures.
Integral to the aim of this project is the development of a community of people co-creating and experimenting in the
construction of the solar generator together. The project is being conducted in
a very dynamic way, evaluating as many different ideas as possible and
experimenting with models and full size prototypes.
The prototype is likely to be situated in Johannesburg’s Joubert Park, off Wolmarans Street in the
inner City, where a not for profit organisation called the Green House Project have expressed an interest in giving
us an area of land to experiment and develop the system.
The center is open to the public and has a building show-casing alternative energy technologies including solar
water heating, cooking and power generation.
